Tricolour handkerchief with the portrait of Pio IX
1848
Fazzoletto tricolore con l’effigie di Pio IX
In 1848 Tricolore flags and handkerchiefs, cockades, scarves and bandanas resurface in many parts of Italy as symbols of freedom from the foreign oppression.
The new Pope, together with Carlo Alberto, is hailed as the liberator of Italy and his face is associated more and more often to the Tricolore flags and patriotic bandanas.
