The reborn of the Tricolour flag
La rinascita del Tricolore
In the first half of the 1840s, a new chapter in Italy’s political history begin: Vincenzo Gioberti arrested and forced to exile in 1833 because of his sympathizing with Giovane Italia, being aware of Mazzini’s uprisings failure, suggests a peaceful way to make the Italian nation rise again through a confederation of the little States already existing under the Pope’s power. The “neo-guelfo movement” is founded. The new Pope Pio IX seems to be the liberal Pope imagined by Gioberti. On March 23, 1848, king Carlo Alberto decides to fight against Austria and crossing the Ticino river he chooses for his army the Tricolore flag with the coat of arms of the House of Savoy on it. The Home Office Secretary Biagiotti fixes the characteristics of the new flag: he added the coat-of-arms of the House of Savoy with a white cross on a red field fringed in blue to the Tricolore flag by now symbolising definitively the ideals of independence and nationality.
