The Tricolour becomes the national flag

In the first half of the 40s, a new chapter in Italian political history begins: Vincenzo Gioberti arrested and forced to exile in 1833 because of his sympathizing with Giovane Italia, being aware of Mazzini’s uprisings failure, suggests a peaceful way to make the Italian nation rise again through a confederation of the little States already existing under the Pope’s power. The “neo-guelfo movement” is founded. The new Pope Pio IX seems to be the liberal Pope imagined by Gioberti. On the March 23, 1848, King Carlo Alberto decides to fight against Austria and crossing the Ticino river he chooses for his army the tricolour flag with the coat of arms of the House of Savoy Family on it. The Home Office Secretary Biagiotti is designated to fix the characteristics of the new flag: he adds to the Tricolour flag by now symbolising definitively the ideals of independence and nationality, the coat-of-arms of the Savoy Family with a white cross on a red field fringed in blue.[sottopagine]
