Ritratto di Ciro Menotti

Ten years after the first revolts, in the Duchy of Modena and Reggio the intolerance of despotism among people had increased so much to provoke a new revolution. Ciro Menotti was the life of this insurrection. In 1830 Menotti writes: “Independence, Union and Freedom must be the words of the new Italy and the Tricolore flag, green, red and white, must be united to the cross joining the symbol of Freedom to that of Religion. Without the banner of Religion we can risk to have a reaction. Hurdles can be won bypassing them: it has always been wrong to face them directly and we have many samples of this. All the Italians will sustain this symbol joined to freedom”.
